Article Biennalen 2008 - a short summary
Article Biennial was discontinued for the second time 15.-30.November 2008
Number of artists / artist groups represented in the exhibition: 12 pieces
The Biennial was a very successful event as reflected in the positive press reviews and the number of visitors. We have registered over 5,000 visitors to Article Biennial. (The number is calculated on the number we have managed to quantify through registrations. We are assuming that even more visitors came to the exhibition, especially since we are not able to keep track of random visitors for all the public places where works of art were presented.
Article had a good press coverage in the media - through Stavanger Aftenblad , Rogaland newspaper, Dagens Næringsliv, BBC UK radio, French website www.Arte.TV, Sola magazine and What's On magazine. There has also been several reports on lokaltv and Culturenews NRK. We had also established a collaboration with students from the Media studies at UIS to make documentation materials.
The feedback from the public sectors have been entirely positive, some think the Biennial has presented rare and exciting works of art - due to the fact that the artwork was to find out in the metropolis we had generally positive response. Especially nice to see how the Biennial appealed to the youth, we learned that there was a rumor in the various blogs on the web about the "blue man" - Marussich`s performance that took place at Tou Scene.
We have also received individual feedback from the audience who found the artwork disruptive, either in terms of soundlevel (Maia Urstad and Hilde H. Johnsens installajson on Bryne Train), or artwork that used the ATM has led to reporting to police. (Junjie Watanabe installation by Sr-Bank) Regarding these incidents we have gone into each individual case and considered whether it was appropriate to take complaints to follow or let it rip. We choose to focus positive that art can provoke and create disturbances in the everyday.
One work of art had to be removed before the Biennial was finally due to unexpected spring cold. (Amanda Steggell`s electromagnetic fountain was not designed to withstand several minus degrees.) Here it was necessary to evacuate the artwork to avoid damage.
In addition to the public in general we have also received good feedback from the academic environment that the Biennial presented an exciting and engaging artistic program. It has delighted us so much to get good feedback from several environments.
